At this year’s Green Building Impact Awards, attendees experienced a new program element: the Project Preview Showcase. For the first time, every project submitted for award consideration was displayed, giving attendees the opportunity to explore the breadth and diversity of sustainable building work taking place across Connecticut. Throughout the evening, guests reviewed project boards, spoke with project teams, and cast votes for the inaugural Community Choice Award.
The Project Preview Showcase quickly became one of the evening’s most engaging experiences. Attendees spent time exploring projects ranging from schools and libraries to multifamily housing and community developments, discussing ideas with project teams, and casting votes for the project that inspired them most.
The Project Everyone Was Talking About
The 550 Burnside Hope Development in East Hartford stood out by showing that sustainability, affordability, and community-centered design can work together.
Developed by Habitat for Humanity of North Central Connecticut, the project earned both the Award of Merit in the Single-Family Residential category and the first-ever Community Choice Award for its thoughtful approach to high-performance housing for first-time homebuyers.
A Different Kind of Housing Development
The 550 Burnside Hope Development consists of ten DOE Zero Energy Ready certified single-family homes designed specifically for first-time homebuyers.
Each all-electric home was built with long-term comfort, indoor air quality, and energy performance in mind. Features include:
- Triple-pane windows
- High-performance insulation and airtight construction
- Energy recovery ventilation systems for continuous fresh air
- Heat pump technology
- Solar-ready infrastructure
- Low-VOC materials
- EPA WaterSense certification
The homes achieved HERS scores ranging from 39 to 45, demonstrating that high-performance construction can be delivered affordably and at scale.
But what makes this project especially compelling is that sustainability was approached as both a building strategy and a community strategy.
The site design includes a shared green space shaded by preserved mature oak trees, outdoor gathering areas, a fenced dog park, and extensive new landscaping that helps create a connected, welcoming neighborhood environment.
This is not just efficient housing. It’s community-centered housing designed around wellness, resilience, and long-term livability.
Why the Project Resonated
In many ways, the Burnside Hope Development reflects a growing shift happening across the building industry. More organizations, municipalities, and housing advocates are recognizing that sustainability cannot remain a luxury market concept.
High-performance housing must become accessible to working families and first-time buyers if we want healthier communities and a more resilient housing future.
The juror comments reinforced that perspective: “The project exemplifies affordable energy efficient community building with thoughtful site layout that creates opportunities for community interaction…This is the way new construction for first time homebuyers should be.”

A Model Worth Replicating
Projects like this demonstrate that energy efficiency, durability, healthy indoor environments, and affordability do not have to compete with one another. They can work together.
As Connecticut continues to address housing affordability, climate resilience, and energy challenges, developments like this provide a real-world example of what practical sustainability leadership can look like.
