BuildGreenCT recognizes excellence in green building design and construction through its Green Building Impact Awards. Established in 2006, this prestigious award program celebrates excellence in transformative building design and construction practices, and supports the broader goals of using the built environment as a vehicle for sustainability, resource efficiency, improved health, thriving communities, and climate resiliency in Connecticut and beyond.

The Jury will recognize one project that best embodies outstanding achievement.
Merit and Honor Project Awards
The Jury will recognize projects that demonstrate exemplary achievement in key focus areas and may adjust award categories at its discretion.

Community Choice Award
All Award Ceremony attendees will get to be a jury member by viewing the Community Choice Award project display boards and voting. The winner will be announced at the Award Ceremony.
The Jury
An independent jury will be convened to encompass diverse areas of expertise in building and landscape architecture/design, engineering, construction, and high-performance/green rating systems.
Drawing on this expertise, The Jury will evaluate submissions and nominations according to criteria that include and support BuildGreenCT’s vision to realize “A healthy, resilient, equitable built environment that supports the ability for people, communities, and the planet to thrive.

Judging Criteria
Each project will be judged with the criteria below. Weight is given to projects with documented performance data, innovative sustainable strategies or technologies, challenges overcome, and achievements.
- Inspirational leadership and exemplary performance in at least one area.
- Performance metrics, such as EUI or HERS, carbon emissions, post-occupancy data, community surveys, etc.
- Overall aesthetics and functionality of the project.
- Holistic application of sustainability in multiple measures (e.g. energy efficiency, water conservation, responsible materials use, site design and transport linkage, carbon reduction, biophilia, use of renewable energy, indoor air quality, resiliency, equity, and social justice).
- Process (e.g. community and stakeholder engagement, integrated design, sustainable motivations and evaluations).
- Certifications and awards attained.
- Completeness of application.
- Connection to BuildGreenCT’s mission and vision.
Project Eligibility
- Since the awards program has been on hiatus, this year’s program will have a longer look-back – 5 years. Project entries must be works that have achieved substantial completion as of January 2020. Future award programs will have a three year look-back.
- Project entries must be works that have achieved completion as of January 2020 (5 year look-back).
- Projects must be located in CT, or alternatively, must be designed/built by a CT resident (living within CT borders) or firm providing services for the project completed by their CT office.
- Submitters can be architects, builders, engineers, owners, developers, consultants, etc.
- Firms may submit more than one project for consideration; each project submitted shall be entered individually.

Submission Requirements
- Project Information — Include project name, location, square footage, project type, and date of substantial completion (student design submissions are not expected to be completed building projects).
- Project Summary — Include project focus, certification frameworks, awards, and any green funding or incentives.
- Project Details — Provide narratives describing the impetus for the project, goals, process, challenges, solutions, site strategy, energy strategy, equity strategy, health and wellness strategy, sustainability metrics, and optional project performance data.
- Project Images — Clear, high-quality, and compelling images are among the most important parts of the submission:
- Limited to 10 images
- Minimum resolution 1920 x 1080 pixels
- Maximum file size 2 MB per image
- Accepted formats: JPG or PNG

Student Design Awards
Eligibility:
- Entries must have been completed while the student(s) was enrolled in school, and no earlier than the Fall 2024 semester.
- Student must be a Connecticut resident or attending an accredited High School or College in Connecticut.
- The submitted project may either be part of an assignment or extra-curricular work.
Registration Fee:
$40 per entry
- An additional $25 fee will be applied to each student design entry to cover the cost of producing the display board for the Project Showcase Preview.
Student Design Submission Requirements
- Project information including name, square footage, project type, proposed location (if applicable).
- Project summary including description, sustainability focus, and inspired by or targeted certification frameworks.
- Project details including goals, challenges, solutions, and sustainability strategies: energy, embodied carbon, health, water, resiliency, and equity.
- Project images. Quality, clear and compelling project images are one of the most important parts of the awards submission:
- Limited to 10 high-quality images
- Minimum pixel size of 1920 x 1080
- Maximum file size 2MB per image
- JPG or PNG
- Students may submit more than one project for consideration.

Trailblazer Award
The Trailblazer Award recognizes efforts to transform or promote intelligent stewardship of our resources that have a unique and lasting impact on the welfare of the public and the environment.
Eligibility:
- Trailblazer candidates may be nominated by others or themselves.
- Nomination can be an individual, organization, government entity, company, or a community.
- Nominee must reside and/or work in Connecticut.
Registration Fee:
$50 per entry
Submission Requirements
- Description: of an individual, organization, or entity's motivations, concept, and goals.
- Approach: description for how goals are achieved and innovative strategies.
- Outcome: description for what impacts the trailblazer has had in Connecticut and beyond.

Judy Swann Green Advocate Award
The Judy Swann Green Advocate Award is awarded to an individual or organization who demonstrates an outstanding commitment to practicing and promoting sustainability in Connecticut, by making major or longstanding contributions to the sustainability field in Connecticut through education, advocacy, and /or civic engagement.
Eligibility:
- Green Advocate candidates must be nominated by others.
- Nomination can be an individual, organization, government entity, or a community.
- Nominees must reside and/or work in Connecticut.
Registration Fee:
N/A
Submission Requirements
