Tell us about your company.

Led by Principal Architect Cat Santos Young, we are a full-service architecture firm specializing in sustainable, custom homes in coastal Connecticut, Rhode Island, and beyond.

What is your role in sustainability?

We believe sustainable design should be accessible regardless of building typology or budget. Our business model ranges from passive house luxury homes and pretty good house additions to pro bono or reduced-cost services for nonprofit organizations and local businesses with limited budgets. Through it all, sustainable high performance is our standard practice. In this way, we’re helping to move the needle toward a more equitable and sustainable future for our communities and for Connecticut as a whole.

What’s your Why?

We came to BuildGreenCT through our involvement with CT Passive House, and over the years, we’ve come to deeply value the power of community within this organization. The connections, inspiration, and shared knowledge from like-minded companies across the state have been instrumental in shaping our practice in meaningful and nuanced ways. More recently, a factory tour at Urban Mining, hosted by BuildGreenCT not only offered an exciting experience, but it also led to a connection with a materials specialist who shared critical information to help our studio develop our standard specification for a low-carbon concrete mix using Pozzotive. That single exchange was invaluable—and it’s just one of many benefits we’ve gained through years of active membership and engagement.

Project Spotlight

We have a project currently under construction with BPC Green Builders – Birchfell Passive House in Sharon, Connecticut that is Phius Core Design Certified, carbon smart, and utilizes Croft panelized assemblies with compressed straw insulation. It’s a dream project with dream clients and the dream project team to boot. It’s been thrilling to see all our hard work take shape on the job site, and we hope the project will inspire more builders and architects to build with some of the lesser-known products and materials we are using.

What motivates you?

At our core, we are motivated by prioritizing well-being: The well-being of those who use our buildings by designing comfortable spaces connected to nature; the well-being of our environment by designing built forms that demand little energy and use natural materials; and the well-being of our team by fostering a work ethic of working hard and playing hard. This summer you’ll find us taking a pottery class and singing karaoke in between design presentations and construction document production!
