About The International Living Future Institute (ILFI)

The Living Building Challenge® (LBC) is the built environment’s most rigorous performance standard. The program calls for the creation of building projects at all scales that operate as cleanly, beautifully, and efficiently as nature’s architecture. It is a philosophy, certification, and advocacy tool for projects to move beyond merely being less bad and to become truly regenerative. ILFI also has other certification pathways for buildings to engage in various performance categories such as Zero Energy, Zero Carbon, CORE Green Building Standard, and Petal Certification.

Although the LBC is the International Living Future Institute’s (ILFI) flagship program, the Institute seeks to transform the built environment at all scales to create a future that is socially just, culturally rich, and ecologically restorative and has developed other programs that address more than just buildings. The Living Community Challenge (LCC) is a framework for master planning, design, and construction at the neighborhood scale. The Living Product Challenge (LPC) is a framework for manufacturers to create products that are healthy, inspirational, and give back to the environment. ILFI also administers several transparency labels including DECLARE, a health label for building products, JUST, a social justice label for organizations, and REVEAL, an energy label for buildings.
