Join BuildGreenCT for an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Rogers Mill, an inspiring example of how adaptive reuse, historic preservation, ecological restoration, and sustainable residential design can work together to create a resilient future.

Led by Lindsay Suter, AIA, LEED AP, Principal of Lindsay Suter Architects, this tour will explore the design strategies and decision-making behind the transformation of this historic property. Attendees will gain firsthand insight into integrating sustainable design principles within historic and vernacular building types while preserving the site’s character and relationship to its surrounding landscape. Features include:

• Local materials (on-site timbers and stone)
• Reclaimed materials (historic tile, flagstone from Albert Einstein’s walkway, recycled HDPE roof slates)
• Experimental materials (Accoya wood, post-consumer pozzolan concrete, cork insulation)
• Electric air-air heat pump heating/de-humidification;
• Vegetable-oil (biodiesel) fired back-up heat and hot water
• Photovoltaics & grid-interconnected back-up batteries
• Electric vehicle charger
• Habitat restoration (pro-pollinator meadows, invasive species removal, animal shelters/bird boxes)
• Fish ladder integrated into dam, providing eel and fish passage for resident and migratory aquatic species.

During this Spotlight Tour, participants will explore:

• Adaptive reuse strategies that preserve historic character while supporting modern residential use
• Sustainable design approaches integrated into historic and vernacular architecture
• Ecological restoration and habitat conservation efforts throughout the site
• Lessons learned from balancing preservation, sustainability, and long-term resilience
